SUPER-INSULATED HOUSE

RVC built Superinsulated home 1984.
Newbury, MA

Building Site Design

  • House is set into an existing slope to minimize disturbance to the soil and the existing lot contours.

  • House is oriented for best passive solar gain.

  • The final grading allows positive surface water runoff away from the foundation.

  • The disturbed areas of the site are re-seeded with minimal lawn area, with the areas surrounding the lawn seeded with a conservation mix of grasses and wildflowers.

  • No impermeable materials used for the driveway and walks.

House Design & Construction

  • Insulated basement floor & walls.

  • Superinsulated Construction 1984.
Note the plastic Air / vapor barrier installed between the double exterior walls
Open-web floor trusses instead of solid lumber floor joists. This saves timber and provides space for ventilation ducting.

  • R-30 wall insulation / R-? ceiling insulation.

  • Continuous vapor barrier and air sealing to prevent drafts and heat loss.

  • High quality casement windows with Low-E glass sized appropriately to benefit natural heating and cooling.

  • Deep eave overhangs to increase summer shading and weather protection.

  • Heating system appropriately sized for a very well insulated home.

  • Full time heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system ducted throughout the home to provide fresh air, expel stale air, and to manage moisture content.
